Choosing a suitable location can be one of the most important aspects of a Portrait Photography session. Location shoots differ from studio photoshoots in that they offer the potential for more interesting settings and backgrounds. And while we typically offer location suggestions, we always seek to educate our clients and look for their input and buy-in.
A suitable location is always important to the session, but it is not the main subject of the images. We always joke that we are confident that we can capture a great portrait in almost any location. But, if we have the opportunity, we prefer the spot to positively contribute to both the experience and final results.
Things that may help when choosing a location.
- Is there a location that has a special meaning to you? Having a connection to a place has the potential to take the images to the next level. Does the spot add to the story that the images will tell? Will it add to the emotional impact?
- Does the location offer a variety of textures? Urban locations are great for having a variety of differing textures in close proximity. This can allow for completely different looking shots without having to move around and break the flow of the session. Or, if it is a natural setting – does it have a water element, rocks, old buildings? Textures can add an extra layer of interest to the images.
- Will the area be crowded? Does your vision for the final images allow for some people in the background? Will you have to continuously pause the session to wait for people to move out of the camera frame? Will you feel self-conscious with other people around you?
- How easily will it be to get everyone and everything to the spot where you want to shoot? Is the public permitted access the location and is professional photography allowed? Some locations have restrictions for photography equipment and some types of photography services.
- Will you be comfortable enough to connect with the experience? Will the location have distractions that will compete for your attention? Will you be relaxed enough to pose naturally?
The most important aspect of the portrait images will (and should) be the subject being photographed. But the location plays a very important role as it will influence the overall look and feel of the photographs. That is why it is important to give sufficient thought to the location. As a studio that has been photographing portraits for many years, we have scouted many appropriate venues. However, we always seek for our sessions to be a collaboration. So the more feedback and thought we receive from our clients the better the experience and session outcome.
